One influential work in this direction was Abraham Maslow’s hierarchy of needs — a list of human needs, often displayed suggestively in the form of a pyramid, ranging from the most basic (food and shelter) to the most refined. At the top lurks “self-actualization, the ultimate goal of achieving one’s creative capacities. Psychologist Scott Barry Kaufman has elaborated on this model, both by exploring less-well-known writings of Maslow’s, and also by incorporating more recent empirical psychological studies. He suggests the more dynamical metaphor of a sailboat, where the hull represents basic security needs and the sail more creative and dynamical capabilities. It’s an interesting take on the importance of appreciating that the nature of our lives is one of constant flux. Scott Barry Kaufman received his Ph.D. in cognitive psychology from Yale University. He has taught at Columbia University, NYU, the University of Pennsylvania, and elsewhere. He is the host of The Psychology Podcast. He was named by Business Insider as one of the “50 groundbreaking scientists who are changing the way we see the world.” He is the author of numerous books; his most recent, Transcend: The New Science of Self-Actualization, is published April 7.

This week’s podcast is a first for me – my guest is a former patient of mine, Nicola Singleton. I met Nicola back in September 2016 on the second series of my BBC1 TV documentary, Doctor In The House. Since then, she has completely transformed her health and I’m so pleased she’s agreed to share that story with you. Nicola was, in her own words, ‘aged 38 but feeling 98’. She had a list of 10 different health diagnoses and was taking 20 different pills a day. Her main issues were feeling crippled with the exhaustion of chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS) along with the debilitating, widespread pain of fibromyalgia – both complex and misunderstood conditions from which she’d been told there was no hope of recovery. She couldn’t work, couldn’t play with her kids, could barely get out of bed. Nicola also suffered from anxiety, depression, IBS and more. She was so desperate to feel better and start living again that she allowed me, and a BBC television crew, to practically move in with her, her husband and three young children for six weeks. In this podcast, we revisit what happened and how, by removing the illness labels and focusing on creating health, rather than treating disease, Nicola was pain free by the end of those six weeks. My guest on today’s conversation is Vivek Murthy. Vivek was the US Surgeon General under the Obama administration and is now author of the fantastic book, Together, about the healing power of human connection. And connect is exactly what Vivek and I did during this conversation in a really deep and profound way. During this conversation, we talk about what authenticity really means and how powerful it is to be truly vulnerable. We also talk about the consequences of this pandemic causing a social recession as well as an economic recession and how lockdown is making an already chronic problem of loneliness much worse. But this conversation is about hope and optimism - could the outcome of our separation in fact be a social revival? Are we realising more than ever before that we need to put people first? When he was in office, Vivek realised that the thread running through so many social and health problems, touching people of all ages, was loneliness. As doctors, we share the conviction that lack of connections is a major factor in many modern health conditions. We discuss how loneliness can manifest as irritability, anger, depression and disturbed sleep. It can also be behind ailments from anxiety to addiction and even obesity. And, of course, in the current pandemic, its effects are amplified. So, could it be time for us to take stock of how much we’ve missed our family, friends, even strangers – and decide how we want those relationships to be going forwards? Vivek believes we need to make an explicit commitment to other people – reaching out to others and giving our undistracted time when we do. Service, he says, is a powerful antidote to loneliness – it’s you adding value to the world. Vivek’s guiding principle is to ‘put people first’ in society, as well as in our individual lives and to let love and compassion be our path out of loneliness and suffering. It’s really hard to disagree with this when you hear this conversation, and I hope you find it as meaningful as I did. Big names and logos rarely signify an elevated taste level or style but instead, it's much more about the status you want to display with them. 02:04 2. Dress inappropriately for the occasion. A confident man isn't afraid to wear what he wants when he wants to wear it. At the same time, it's all about the right time and place. 03:11 3. Do things purely because it makes them look successful. Buying an expensive car or a luxury watch that you can't really afford will probably make you initially look successful but down the line, people will always catch up on it. 03:55 4. Pretend that he's someone else because he's just happy with the way he is. Of course, that doesn't mean that they can't improve and get better but he's not insecure about it and is not ashamed of himself. 05:49 5. Constantly come up with excuses. Basically, when you make an excuse, you push the plane of your actions to something else or someone else. I mean under the right circumstances, it can be warranted. 06:41 6. Wait for permission to act, they just act! For example, when I realized that I had to be an entrepreneur and the opportunity presented itself, I took it even though it was risky at the time and I wasn't sure that it would lead somewhere. 08:15 7. Avoid conflict at all costs. Avoiding conflict doesn't actually solve it, it just means you're kicking the can down the road where sometimes it can lead to more resentment or to an even bigger problem. 09:24 8. Fear feedback or inconvenient truths because they're just part of who we are. Trying to pretend that you're perfect will ultimately only hold you back from getting better. Why? You can't fix a problem if you're in denial about it. 10:17 9. Afraid of failure. Without failure, no one can achieve mastery. 11:23 10. Take advertising and social media or Instagram profiles too seriously. Sometimes, when you see those pictures, it may seem like the world around us is living this glamorous lifestyle while we are stuck in our office doing something we don't really like. 12:20 11. Yield to peer pressure. Why? Well, they know what's good for them and what isn't, they're not afraid to speak up if someone wants to sell them something, wants them to do something because they know, at the end of the day, they would regret it. 13:30 12. People pleasers. Now, first, let me say that there is nothing inherently wrong with wanting to make other people happy and there is always a time and a place for that, however, people pleasers are often easy to take advantage of. Confident men typically balance their own needs with other people's needs so it's all respectful, dignified, and no one loses face or is embarrassed or ridiculed. 14:58 13. Hide behind screens or anonymity. Online interactions have the potential to dehumanize communication and it's much easier to humiliate someone or to say bad things about them when it's just a remote transaction and you can hide behind an alias that is not tied to your existence. If you're afraid to be connected to anything that you say, you probably shouldn't say it in the first place. 16:21 14. Afraid to ask for help if they need it. As an entrepreneur and CEO who started as a one-man show from scratch, I always had the tendency to just want to do things myself, however, over the years, I've learned that to really accomplish something and to build something bigger than me, I have to rely on other people, teach them to the best of my ability, and trust them that they can do things. 17:17 15. Assume the world around them is out to get them or to make them small or ridiculed. When other people say things or do things that hurt you or your feelings, it's always very easy to assume malicious intent. 18:23 16. Treat other people around them poorly even though they may be in a more powerful position than them. In my mind, people who treat others poorly to make themselves feel better is a sure sign that they're insecure about themselves.

Mark McClish was a federal law enforcement officer for 26 years. He started his law enforcement career in 1983 with the U.S. Secret Service Uniformed Division. During the two years he was with the Secret Service he was assigned to the White House. His main duties were protecting the White House complex. He would also on occasion provide protection for President Reagan when the President traveled. In 1985, he was hired by the U.S. Marshals Service and served as a Deputy U.S. Marshal in Springfield, IL. This change allowed him to focus more on investigations and less on protection. He worked numerous federal fugitive cases and assisted local law enforcement in apprehending state fugitives. He also worked on a "Warrant Apprehension Narcotic's Team" which was a national drug task force. In 1990, Mark was promoted to the position of Inspector/Instructor at the U.S. Marshals Service Training Academy located at the Federal Law Enforcement Training Center in Glynco, GA. He taught at the Training Academy for nine years serving as the lead instructor on interviewing techniques. He used this time to study deceptive statements and conduct research on deception. Based on his findings, he created the Statement Analysis techniques for detecting deception in a verbal and written statement. While assigned to the Training Academy Mark was also the lead defensive tactics instructor for the Marshals Service. Mark left the Training Academy in 1999 and took a position as a Supervisory Deputy U.S. Marshal in Greenville, NC. He supervised four offices located in Eastern NC. He also spoke at law enforcement conferences and conducted Statement Analysis seminars on behalf of the Marshals Service. Mark retired from the Marshals Service in 2009 and started Advanced Interviewing Concepts. His company provides interviewing skills training and assists investigators in analyzing statements. Mark currently gives presentations and seminars on Statement Analysis throughout the U.S. He has spoken at numerous conferences and has trained a variety of law enforcement agencies and military organizations. He is the author of the books I Know You Are Lying and Don't Be Deceived. He also developed the Statement Analyzer which is software that will analyze a statement for deception.
