He has recorded a unique album, “No Force On Earth” as a celebration and commemoration of the Easter uprising of 1916 that saw the birth of the Irish Republic. In his homeland Damien is held in the highest regard by peers and audiences and as well as a string of number 1 albums he has a haul ofMeteor Awards. Damien is already known for his searing live shows with his band after several tours across the UK however the close up intensity of his acoustic performance has, until now, only been a pleasure that Irish audiences have witnessed. This is a one off opportunity to see Damien in an intimate setting sharing his story of this centenary year. An opportunity to hear the man regarded by many as the next wave of Irish musical heritage. Amongst the tracks he wrote himself for the album, some are classic covers of the period, is Black Bank Folk….. “About my great aunt Jenny(or Jinny as she was known)” says Damien. Aunt Jinny, a woman at the heart of the uprising and who’s story must be heard. Damien will launch a new studio album in 2017 and return to touring with his band in the meantime this is your chance to hear a very personal performance of this album along with some of Damien’s Finest Tunes

LYRICS

CITIZENS CELEBRATE TRANSFORMATIVE MOMENT IN IRELAND’S HISTORY PARADE with FREE OPEN AIR PAGEANT AND CONCERT Merrion Square at 2pm, setting out for the GPO at 3pm April 24, 2016 Join Panti Bliss, Fionnuala Flanagan, Adrian Dunbar, Donal Lunny, Damien Dempsey, Don Baker, Frances Black, Laoise Kelly, Sibéal Ní Chasaide Tomorrow, Sunday, April 24th the girls from Craobh O’Toole’s GAA club, Donnycarney, lead off the Reclaim 1916 parade from Merrion Square at 2pm. They carry our specially designed images of the Proclamation’s signatories to the GPO where actor Adrian Dunbar hosts a festival of music, dance and readings. Renowned actors, musicians, dancers join community groups, housing action networks, people trapped in direct provision, Travellers, women’s organisations, the Rossport community, the anti-war movement, LGBTI campaigns and Palestinian, Syrian and Kurdish support groups in Reclaim’s final initiative, a parade and open-air pageant and concert. Chief patron of this citizens’ initiative, artist Robert Ballagh, says: “We’re delighted that Reclaim the Vision of 1916 culminates in this chance for all citizens of Ireland, including the forgotten, the ignored, marginalised and discriminated against, to gather together to celebrate a transformative moment in our history. “The government’s military parade this Easter Monday provided no such chance. Many people living in Ireland who had a right to be there, were excluded from that event. Reclaim 1916 corrects this injustice. We are reclaiming the bravery and sacrifice of the men and women who fought in 1916. They weren’t mere rebels, they were visionaries calling for revolution and a complete transformation of Irish society. “Our parade and free open-air pageant and concert have created a platform for a republic that successive governments have failed to deliver: a republic of equality and opportunity with nobody marginalised, left behind or forgotten or forced through economic circumstance to flee the country of their birth,” says Ballagh. Adrian Dunbar and Fionnuala Flanagan, with Panti Bliss and Stephen Murphy, give readings. Musician Donal Lunny plays a piece he composed for the occasion. Singers include Don Baker, Frances Black and Damien Dempsey. Sibéal Ní Chasaide, who wowed viewers of RTE’s Centenary programme with her haunting rendition of Mise Éire, will also perform. Award-winning uilleann piper Tiarnain Ó Duinchinn, harpists Laoise Kelly and Michelle Mulcahy, and flautist Emer Mayock join them. Sean-nós dancer Sibéal Davitt is sure to keep the crowd on their toes! This festival is the final event in the Reclaim 1916 programme. Reclaim the Vision of 1916 is a civil society group of artists, academics, trade unionists, community activists, journalists and other interested citizens who believe Ireland can be reinvigorated by the ideals of the signatories of the Proclamation. The festival on April 24 is our final commemorative initiative. See www.reclaim1916.ie or like us on Facebook. Video © Paula Geraghty

No Irish Need Apply

LYRICS

Written by Paddy Ivory Breen and Music by Kenn Gordon this song tells of the plight of the Irish after the first world war and right up to the 60's...Irish Catholics in America have a vibrant memory of humiliating job discrimination, which featured omnipresent signs proclaiming "Help Wanted--No Irish Need Apply!" No one has ever seen one of these NINA signs because they were extremely rare or nonexistent. The market for female household workers occasionally specified religion or nationality. Newspaper ads for women sometimes did include NINA, but Irish women nevertheless dominated the market for domestics because they provided a reliable supply of an essential service. Newspaper ads for men with NINA were exceedingly rare. The slogan was commonplace in upper class London by 1820; in 1862 in London there was a song, "No Irish Need Apply," purportedly by a maid looking for work. The song reached America and was modified to depict a man recently arrived in America who sees a NINA ad and confronts and beats up the culprit. The song was an immediate hit, and is the source of the myth. Evidence from the job market shows no significant discrimination against the Irish--on the contrary, employers eagerly sought them out. Some Americans feared the Irish because of their religion, their use of violence, and their threat to democratic elections. By the Civil War these fears had subsided and there were no efforts to exclude Irish immigrants. The Irish worked in gangs in job sites they could control by force. The NINA slogan told them they had to stick together against the Protestant Enemy, in terms of jobs and politics. The NINA myth justified physical assaults, and persisted because it aided ethnic solidarity. After 1940 the solidarity faded away, yet NINA remained as a powerful memory.....The NINA slogan seems to have originated in England, probably after the 1798 Irish rebellion. Throughout the 19th and 20th centuries it was used by English to indicate their distrust of the Irish, both Catholic and Protestant. For example the Anglican bishop of London used the phrase to say he did not want any Irish Anglican ministers in his diocese. By the 1820s it was a cliché in upper and upper middle class London that some fussy housewives refused to hire Irish and had even posted NINA signs in their windows. It is possible that handwritten NINA signs regarding maids did appear in a few American windows, though no one ever reported one. We DO have actual newspaper want ads for women workers that specifies Irish are not wanted; they will be discussed below. In the entire file of the New York Times from 1851 to 1923, there are two NINA ads for men, one of which is for a teenager. Computer searches of classified help wanted ads in the daily editions of other online newspapers before 1923 such as the Booklyn Eagle, the Washington Post and the Chicago Tribune show that NINA ads for men were extremely rare--fewer than two per decade. The complete absence of evidence suggests that probably zero such signs were seen at commercial establishments, shops, factories, stores, hotels, railroads, union halls, hiring halls, personnel offices, labor recruiters etc. anywhere in America, at any time. NINA signs and newspaper ads for apartments to let did exist in England and Northern Ireland, but historians have not discovered reports of any in the United States, Canada or Australia. The myth focuses on public NINA signs which deliberately marginalized and humiliated Irish male job applicants.

Home Sweet Home - 'Sarah' by Paul Alwright

LYRICS

Written and Performed by Paul Alwright https://twitter.com/Paul_Alwright HomeSweetHome https://twitter.com/HSHIreland FILM BY ROC https://www.youtube.com/user/ROCAnimation/ LYRICS: Sarah was in the cold so long her frozen toes were turning black, but she felt more secure in this impure habitat, a small patch of turf consisting of burned heaps of trash, where even rats don’t lurk, for they turn their noses at. Where occasional passersby might disturb her from a nap, to either empty purse and pocket or to hurl hurtful words, words that made her feel like the worlds scourge, no worse than that.. they made her feel like the rats would be more welcome there. Imagine people had to act, to ensure Sarah’s survival.. Imagine Sarah had a home sweet home where to relax... imagine Sarah was no longer a victim of circumstance, or certain banks.. now imagine bureaucrats converging to take it back. The tactless words of those bureaucrats, now bridge the gap between her and those who turned their backs, They don’t cut slack, cause the colour of the collar of their shirts doesn’t match, and yet, upset the apple tart? Oh they’ll reimburse all your tax! So this is what the sons of Róisín died for.. So a high court can tell us to vacate a premises, housing homeless residents, or be removed by force? A premises? A fucking eye sore! That we turned into a sight for sore eyes. When will we learn that by doubting our power, the only thing we actually do is empower our doubts! Our leaders? They’re not planting seeds for the future, they want to see all the seeds that they’re sowing flowering now, The only thing in this life were guaranteed is death and taxes, what can we lose attacking their most sacred of cows? While they were making a killing, negating their children, we we’re turning a building they left vacant into a house, and all they had to say is, ‘Get out’.
